The Press Corps were formed in 2003 when ex-Fluid and Spell drummer extraordinaire Garrett Shavlik (Vocals) thought it'd be fun to have a group where he could get out from behind the drums and shake his tail. Seeing as he was already in band (Seattle's almighty Alta May) with his good buddies / Cohorts in rock Erik Roper (Guitar) and Marcus Pena (Bass), he was three-fifths of the way there. But with Shavlik now up front, who would provide the pounding rhythms ? Old friend Dan Peters from Mudhoney of course. And what about second guitar ? Surely, one guitarist wouldn't be enough for the Press Corps brand of tuneful heavy rock. Enter Bruce Fairweather, guitar mercenary of Mother Love Bone and Green River fame. Voila! The band was now complete.
The Press Corps had a recording session at the Phantom Center in July 2004
Part of e-mail from Dan (Nov 30, 2004) :
"We have 4 songs recorded 2 of which will be on the single. shes all the
wave b/w happiness of the paronoid man."
The first live performance at Rendezvous, Seattle WA (on Nov 2004)
(4 songs / 15 Minutes) Mark Arm and Guy Maddison were in attendance.
Part of e-mail from Dan (Nov 12 2004) :
"The Press Corps did in fact play our first show recently. We are a band that gets together on occasion to drink and play music. Usually more drinking gets done than music. The band is Bruce Fair weather on guitar Marcus Pena and Eric Roper from Alta May on bass and guitar and my buddy Garrett Shavlik on vocals. We are more of a poppier sounding band than any of our other bands, but still play with a lot of spunk and energy to keep us on our toes. A single is going to be released on a local label sometime soon. I don't know the name of the label. We have no grand plan other than to play occasionally and drink often."
Part of e-mail from Dan (May 1 2005)
"The Press Corps played last night at the Sunset Tavern here in lovely
Ballard. The show came off pretty great, for our first proper gig.
WE opened up for Roy Loney from the old band Flaming groovies and Seattles
own Young Fresh Fellows. We played 7 songs which is all we have. Songs are
Press corp, Look, Erotic adventures of everybody else, Happiness of the
parinoid man, Rose gold, Sisters, and one other I can't remember.
I am looking forward to starting the record. No news on the Press Corps
single at this time. Take care, Dan "
Part of e-mail from Dan (Nov 1, 2005)
"No news on the Press Corps yet. We have played a few shows recently, one at
a club called the Rendezvous and one at a party. Still hoping someone will
give us a little money to record. But I don't think that will be happening
any time soon."

I think that the band do not exist anymore but i really love them. The press corps somehow manage to create a unique sound, rooted in the garagrey, melodic hard rock of the members former bands, but also culling from the influences as varied as the backgrounds of the band members themselves. That doesn’t mean the Press Corps were some kind of retro Grunge act. They wrote no-nonsense driving riffs that sound both completely modern and totally classic at the same time. Sort of like your favorite pair of Chuck taylors -- They never go out of style.
